NASF 2 New Preview

Posted by Short-Factor Jul. 21, 2008 @ 3:10 PM EDT

Well... I've given it a lot of thought and I decided to remake Not Another Sprite Fight 2 from scratch. It is no longer 20% done.
The Luigi scene from the last post is still intact, but I decided to completely remake and amp up the fight scenes. I just got out of a bad trend of poor animation, that has been bothering me for a while. Now I am revitalized and ready to kick some ass. I also decided I might as well show Newgrounds just what to expect from NASF 2.

NASF 2 First Scene Preview

This time I'm pulling out some of the stops and really putting my self into making this movie. One of my goals is to raise the bar for sprite animation and hope that sprite movies can be more accepted, as sprite movies have been getting poor reception around the nets lately, and the reasons are obvious.
I will make some hand drawn animation soon too, so don't think I only care about sprites. I have a deep appreciation for the arts.
Anyway, please, enjoy this preview, I put a good deal of effort into this new version.

Also, a brief FAQ about the NASF series:

Q. Will NASF 2 be nothing but Mario vs Sonic?
A. Absolutely not! The introduction of various video game characters was one of the core elements that made the first NASF. I would not ruin that formula.

Q. When will it be released?
A. No date yet but we may see it in a couple months... maybe less.

Q. So... who are the characters going to be?
A. Aside from the obvious Mario and Sonic (AND LUIGI *WINK WINK*), that would be top secret.

Q. Will you use my idea(s)?
A. 99.9% chance of no. Not only is this an outlet for my best ideas (plus a few my close friends have suggested, which are good), many people these days think a movie is only art when it has some gay emo anime storyline. I've gotten suggestions like that (some people actually started writing shitty storylines for NASF) and suggestions for things that have nothing to do with NASF, like crossing over Smash Bros or Naruto. Ha ha, yeah, fuck that.

Q. Are you still working on The Master Games/Sonic vs Shadow 3/<movie name>?????
A. YES. SHUT. UP. Thank you.

NASF 2 Estimated Completion:
*Project Sprite Land subject to change percentage; progress pending*

Holy crap. That was such an improvement. Is it on 30 fps? The one thing that I didn't like was the ground. It was just a big linear fill, and the hills didn't meet it very well. Maybe add some grass or bushes and stuff around the bases of the hills, to make them look slightly more natural (unless it would cause too much trouble with the 3d effects.)

Jul. 21, 2008 | 6:55 PM Short-Factor responds:

25 FPS.
I might add shrubbery around the hills...
But you try animating a ground with that many complex angles and movements.

Awesome. I vote a 5 out of 5.

Freaking awesome, dude. Very very nice. The preview, I mean.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 5:29 PM Warchamp7 says:

Boring ground, yet so beautiful

Jul. 21, 2008 | 6:53 PM Short-Factor responds:

Boring... ground... QUIET YOU.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 5:35 PM Emanhattan says:

Lmao we both are trying to return respect to good old sprite movies.

additionally we both also want to step out of it and make hand drawn stuff wich is awesome : )

You are the god of sprites man, the speed, the background... everythig was perfect.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 5:36 PM Emanhattan says:

oh, yes , some mates here pointed out certain mistakes, the background floor didnt match the hills n stuff.

but no problem, I bet that can be easily changed

Jul. 21, 2008 | 6:52 PM Short-Factor responds:

Actually it would be pretty hard considering I animated all of those hills individually. Its set in stone. But its not that huge of an issue is it?

Jul. 21, 2008 | 5:52 PM TITROTU says:

That's awesome, Short-Factor. Truly awesome. Can't wait to see it. :)

Jul. 21, 2008 | 6:52 PM Short-Factor responds:

Thanks Titrotu.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 5:58 PM Chickenfork says:

Looks promising. What kind of drawn animation are you planning on doing?

Jul. 21, 2008 | 6:52 PM Short-Factor responds:

Many kinds.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 9:03 PM Osuka says:

you got a special sense of humour for the sprites, i want to see this finished :D

Thanks Osuka, I won't let you down!

wtf?! 8% complete!!??
damn this is going to be one heck of a flash movie!

Jul. 21, 2008 | 11:00 PM Short-Factor responds:

Won't be as long as the first NASF but it will be quite long.

Jul. 21, 2008 | 9:22 PM ikool says:

Good stuff! Your style of sprite fights is right up there with Alvin-Earthworm ^.^!

Jul. 21, 2008 | 11:00 PM Short-Factor responds:

I would prefer to branch out from Alvin's style, which has been done to death now and is becoming overrated and slowly becoming hated. As much as a compliment as that is, I must keep my individuality.

Nice psuedo 3D effects, Nice choice of music, Great detail to the little things, the ground dosent really match the hills but I don't think it is that much of a problem, I pretty much like it.
Keep it up this is truly amazing work.

Jul. 25, 2008 | 8:22 PM sarsars says:

You know... honestly... I have the STRANGEST feeling that Luigi will win the whole thing.

Like he'll crash the Tornado into Mario and Sonic and defeat them both, somehow.

It'd be different, and fun to watch, so if that's true: I'll enjoy it.

Can you give us any more sneak peaks, or give us info on new characters that will make an appearance? I mean, you've already told us that Tails goes "bye-bye" so what's the harm in telling us a character who makes it in? Samus? Donkey Kong? Crono? Any of those?

Also, is Shadow part of the fight too; as he's made a few appearances in the original to help Sonic out. Since Tail, driving the airplane that carried Mario and Sonic a bit in the first one, was "defeated" meaning that he was in the fight, does that mean the same for Shadow?

BTW: I'm new, but I've literally watches NASF at least 20 times. I just love it so much! Keep up the good work!

Jul. 25, 2008 | 11:00 PM Short-Factor responds:

Not using your ideas.
Not releasing characters.
Not revealing info.
No more previews. *Update* Actually I'm releasing one more preview.
I hope that answers your questions, because that's all you'll get for them.

holy fucking shit that was flawless. seriously i didnt detect any flaw that crap about the ground is not a big deal so i wont count it as one. man you have improved alot in your putting in 3D effects wich is not seen much in sprites and animation has also improved. i cant wait to see the rest good luck

Jul. 29, 2008 | 10:25 PM Short-Factor responds:

Most people don't seem to realize its not actually 3D, just scaling and motion tweens. Also there are guidelines to making 3D effects look right, so it is harder than it seems. I have come up with quite a few theories for making more complex 3D effects in Flash and not many have worked so far, sadly.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 5:47 PM Golden-Fox says:

Can't wait. It looks terrific! :D

Jul. 29, 2008 | 1:54 PM JSste92 says:

Instead of making this, why don't you get on with making Sonic vs Shadow 3.
It's been years now, it dosen't take this long

Jul. 29, 2008 | 10:22 PM Short-Factor responds:

I never liked the Sonic vs Shadow series, all the movie was was a test animation. I didn't mean for it to go this far.
NASF is my favorite and largest project to date, and I would much rather make the sequel to NASF than Sonic vs Shadow any day.
But I WILL eventually make Sonic vs Shadow 3, so please be patient. I consider NASF 2 to be of far greater importance.

Jul. 29, 2008 | 2:04 PM flashman16 says:

i watched your youtube version with the commentary, you said you would answer questions here so here it is, you edited a lot of the generic sounds to make them unique for NASF, did you use Flash to do that? or a specialised program? if was a separate program could you say what it was?

reason i'm asing is because i'm making a dark sonic series, i'd like to be able to edit his voices to become darker, similar to the voice at the end of the movie Dark Sonic Vs Shadow [on youtube, made by CrazyEight901]

thanx if you can help out, i'll understand if you cant or wont

[if you can help i'll be sure to credit you]

Jul. 29, 2008 | 10:19 PM Short-Factor responds:

I use Sound Forge for heavy editing and FL Studio for creating custom sounds. I know what movie you're talking about, I have seen both of them, and yes Sound Forge can make voices sound like that.

Jul. 29, 2008 | 11:47 PM flashman16 says:

sound forge? not heard of it, where did you get it?

Jul. 31, 2008 | 3:46 AM Short-Factor responds:

You have the internet and you can't search for Sound Forge?

Aug. 1, 2008 | 4:01 PM Emanhattan says:

I noticed that you put a lot of details in your movie, like dust and shade and stuff like that.

you´d be VERY good if you made hand drawn stuff.

so dude, those mario sprites ( running diagonally) you made them yourself or they are in some site?

Oct. 24, 2008 | 3:17 PM Short-Factor responds:

I custom a good deal of those SMW Mario sprites nowadays.
However, that specific sprite of Mario "running diagonally" is not my custom.

Looks really awesom, man! The names SuperSonicDude, or SSD fer short. I'm new here, but i've alrdy seen your vids. You are one of the BEST artists here from what i've seen! Oh, and I can't w8 till NASF2 is out! But, I'm not rushing you so, take your time if you need it, and I'll gladly watch it!

Aug. 2, 2008 | 2:13 PM Short-Factor responds:

Then you are DEFINITELY new. There are folks here on Newgrounds that would totally kick my ass at Flash, let alone sprite animation. I'm nothing compared to Chluaid or the good artists like him.

Aug. 2, 2008 | 9:23 AM beast-unleashed says:

ooohh. i always thought of the scaling and motion tweening for wenever im not just gonna have straight up side scrolling like most sprite films. i dunno why i havent tried it but when you make everything rotate in a 360 like in NASF 1 thats most likely more complex and i want to learn to do that (not asking for your help i know your too busy) but anyway again good luck

Aug. 2, 2008 | 7:56 PM SuperSonicDude109 says:

Hey Short-Factor, it's SSD. I've seen some other flashes and sprite vids, and some were a little better. BTW I have a question. In NASF 2, is it gonna end up as Fire Mario VS Super Sonic? Because that would be rly cool! I hope this gives you some ideas!^-^

Peace Out!
SSD

Aug. 3, 2008 | 3:45 AM Short-Factor responds:

If you wait through the credits of the first NASF you can clearly see that the fight will be Starman Mario vs Super Sonic. Close guess though.

Aug. 4, 2008 | 12:29 AM SuperSonicDude109 says:

Oh....Starman Mario? I haven't seen him in anything ecept ep.6 of SMBZ.
Other than that, I haven't seen Starman Mario in anything. That's AWESOME! Thnx for the info. I'll be havin more questions in a bit.

Peace Out!

I want to know ONE THING; What program do you do your 3D stuff in? Like when Kirby grabbed Zero and basically pile-drived him?

Thanks for your time

Aug. 8, 2008 | 2:28 AM Short-Factor responds:

All of it was in Flash. There is no "3D feature" or other program involved. It was just crafty tweening.

Aug. 16, 2008 | 10:31 PM Chickenfork says:

Are you still working on Master Games? I'll have to admit I don't really find it as interesting as NASF, but the sprite movies I've seen recently have kinda made me yearn for better quality.

Aug. 21, 2008 | 5:42 PM ESwifTT says:

This is fantastic! Just watching the preview itself makes it worth the wait! Tell you the truth, I don't care how the background turns out. As long as the animation itself stands out. I tell you one thing: you're giving Alvin-Earthworm some SERIOUS competition. Keep up the good work!

Nov. 2, 2008 | 8:34 AM Short-Factor responds:

I don't think I could ever give Alvin serious competition. NASF took a year to get 100,000 views. SMBZ 7 got 100,000 views in a week and broke the sound barrier up to the #3 spot in the top 50.

Hell no, I use legitimate raster graphics programs. Pixel tool sucks at pixel work, especially because you can only change the pixel size for pencil and eraser. I use Game Maker's sprite editor, its been tried and true.
